Marvel What If...? has skyrocketed in popularity after it's animated series which is one of my favourite series to watch, and now they're putting it into books!

This is the first instalment in the series and of course it starts with Loki, a character who has gotten even more popular after it has been in the MCU portrayed by the wonderful Tom Hiddleston. Like many I became a fan of his character, not only was he funny and had wonderful magic, but sad backstory which explains why the way that he is, and his backstory is the main reason why he is one of my favourites. Loki has been one of my favourite characters in the Marvel universe because he has been a greatly misunderstood character who had a terrible upbringing, who only wanted to prove himself to his father Odin, who isn't the best father to have. He is pushed to become the "villain" we know because Thor gets everything. To me Loki has always been worthy of being good, and this book did wonders for me as a fan

In this book Thor has been accidently killed by a prank by Loki by tampering with the Destroyer and sent it Earth, but the God of Thunder wasn't the only tragedy, Happy Hogan unfortunately died, and Tony Stark wants revenge. Loki is banished from Asgard to Earth where a Valkyrie  is hell-bent on serving Thor's last wish - to find a Dr Jane Foster and pass Mjolnir to it's rightful heir.

Loki struggles to fulfil his brother last wish as the consequences of his actions haunt him, but when Tony Stark starts his revenge by making his own Destroyer, Loki steps up to not only help Jane Foster, but the place he used to call home.

Throughout his journey he must ask answer the question: is he worthy?

I immensely enjoyed reading this book and seeing Loki's character grow, a lot of times I have seen this happen only for Loki to revert back in the end, but this book made me happy when they didn't do that, and I am excited for what will lie ahead for this Loki.

Other characters like Valkyrie and Jane Foster were a joy to read with coming to terms with Thor's death and how they slowly start to trust and believe in Loki. I've never been a fan of Tony Stark so I was fine with him being the villain in this role, then again he's in that role a lot.

Then there's the mystery of the person that hijacked Loki's prank that killed Thor and what they really want. I believe this character will appear in the other books in the series which is exciting.

There is also The Watcher of course that see's all and has their own thoughts on Loki's journey. It was very interesting reading these chapters and the little twist at the end shocked me.

I am very excited for the next book in the series Marvel: What If...Wanda Maximoff and Peter Parker were siblings?'. Wanda Maximoff has been my number one Marvel character for years, and starring along side Peter Parker is such a good pairing. By the way the first book was written, it looks like all the What If books are all connected and will come together for something epic that I cannot wait for.

There’s something about this author’s writing that I just didn’t like and I probably wouldn’t read another book by them. I think often times this book left me with too many questions over details it didn’t explain either at all or well enough, while at the same time over explaining other details that didn’t matter as much. Overall though, this was a great story about processing grief and accepting love we may not believe we deserve. I do wish that the baby sitter and the lawyer got to play bigger roles in the story because I love them both.

Also, and this is no fault to the author, but probably Marvel’s doing, but I didn’t care for The Watcher aspect of this story. It was way too confusing and a little upsetting a big part of this story wasn’t resolved in this book. This should have been a stand alone book and didn’t need to connect to a broader multiverse plot.
