I’m not sure how I feel about this book. It wasn’t bad by any means, but it’s not something I’d go on discussing for days on end with my friends, as I usually do when I land a great read.
Adrienne’s ex best friend, Dakota, whom Adrienne hasn’t spoken to in 2 years, disappears. Dakota is the dark Goth rocker chick that the usual HS kids are attracted to. She has a wild streak and is pretty much selfish in that she demands a lot of attention from Adrienne, but never gives anything back in return. Throughout the story Adrienne struggles with 2 key issues: 1) Though she is fully aware of Dakota’s faults, she struggles to be more like her 2) She has a love/hate thing going for Dakota, but ultimately she misses her and wants to find out what has happened to her.
The book in not centered on Dakota’s disappearance as much as it is on how Dakota’s influence on Adrienne has turned Adrienne from the all-American girl teen to a Dakota-like outsider. The story is most interesting when it focuses on Dakota’s disappearance and clues are gathered – there’s a bit of suspense that keeps the story moving at a fast clip. However, Adrienne’s ‘I wanna be like Dakota, even though I hate her’ attitude makes the story a little less interesting and quite boring. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much what the book is about. The truth about Dakota is unveiled at the end – but not in a suspenseful way at all.

Main character reeling from the news that her old best friend is missing... sensual, too cool for school kind of crew. My favorite thing here was the writing; it's precise, to the point; it's a style I don't see so much in YA.
Keywords: best friend breakups, secrets, great mom, childhood friends

It's an okay teen read. At first It follows the heroine as she deals changes while she handles the disappearance of an ex-friend. I would not recommend this book for people seeking a perfect heroine who does no wrong.

You know how some authors and writing styles just do it for you? I find Lauren's Strasnick's style and stories so engaging, and this is my favorite of her books so far.

I loved this book. it got me back into mystery book and the whole time i was wondering what happened to the main character. i didn’t predict what happened but when i look back on it, i think i coulda pieced it together if i was looking for it.

I really enjoyed following Adrienne through her journey and self discovery... while this is consider a YA book, I'm not sure I'd recommend it to those under 16, due to some of the content. However the story is a great read... Fast, I would have had it done sooner had I not been sick while reading it... The ending, well it caught me by surprise... I would recommend this to my friends, well and I have... good book

This book has SO much potential but really just falls flat. There are no clues to the mystery. The main character just discovers the answer without build up or tension. There is so real character development. Everything just feels flat and rushed. So disappointed.

This is a very quick read. I read it in about two hours. It is a touching story about friendship and loss, about finding yourself in you rather than finding yourself in relation to your friends. It also has a little bit of a mystery to figure out.

… the idea was there, it just felt poorly executed unfortunately. i felt like it lacked focus, it felt… haphazard? and definitely rushed. idk just all in all, had potential, but could’ve been much better

Adrienne had this one crazy friend - who was fun and exotic, sexy and crazy. her name was Dakota
and suddenly, one day, Dakota is no longer her friend.
Fast forward years later, and Adrienne never understood why their friendship ended, just that it did suddenly. She's found new, comfortable, stable friends. She has dinner dates, a nice comfy boyfriend and life goes on. It's not sexy and exotic like it was with her crazy friend, but it's life.
But, Dakota has always liked the world to revolve around her - and when she leaves a cryptic message on Adrienne's phone and then disappears - Adrienne is left feeling like the only one who cared for Dakota and wants to understand why she's gone.
Murder? Suicide? Still alive? This story is Adrienne hunting for the answers. It's dark and moody and a little crazy. At first the writing is choppy and off - and I think that mimics Adrienne. She's lost, reeling and losing it a little. As she begins to search and try to understand, we see her on the other side of this crisis.
But I had to hold back from giving it a full 4 star review (even though I wanted to!) because I wasn't a huge fan of the manipulation of the MC character near the end
