I’m always a little sceptical of the second chance romance trope because betrayal is often used as a plot device for them.

I saw the twist coming and felt it was obvious, but I kept reading because I didn’t want that to be the twist. The ending felt rushed and not believable, but I loved the “before” chapters.  Fortune did an amazing job with character development, depicting young love and the transition from friends to lovers in a tender way. I really felt the tension and yearning when Sam and Percy were young. However, I found the characters’ actions from THE summer unforgivable, and don’t think that’s something that could have been resolved in a weekend-especially a weekend like that one.

Ah, young love.

Reading this in the dead of winter has been such a treat! I wasn’t too keen on this author’s writing style at first, but I changed my tune pretty quickly.

Overall, this was a quick read that pulled at my heartstrings, tapped into feelings of nostalgia and even revved my engine.

The nostalgia I felt for time spent on the lake at the cottage while reading this was so real. The characters were imperfect but still so deserving of love and forgiveness. There was a minute around 40% of the way through the book where I wasn’t sure about it but that quickly went away and I was fully immersed the rest of the book! I ended up loving these characters. Some of the side characters did feel kind flat and I wish we had gotten more of them.
