Thoroughly enjoyed this as an audiobook, glad to have met those in Fortune’s world.
Nice attention to detail regarding the “x years ago” chapters and their appropriate technology. The conflicts raised by not having unlimited calling, texting, and reliable cell service may definitely go over the heads of younger readers and make conflict/plot points seem flimsy, but I assure you— these things DEFINITELY happened. To me, not just Percy. 🥲🥲🥲
Depiction of small town in the Muskokas is believable but perhaps not truly realistic. Lack of depth in considerations of class and how that would have influenced the decisions and motivations of characters. But still, for what it is, it was a decent book. Kind of wish the epilogue didn’t happen, though. Felt disappointed by it. Either it needed to be included as a full chapter and further developed, or left out entirely.

Carly Fortune read “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and fixed everything that sucked. And it only took one book instead of three.
Solid writing, wonderful book boyfriend, and delightfully spicy.

I have been seeing this book everywhere, and I knew the moment that someone said it was like if The Summer I Turned Pretty were an adult romance novel that I was going to need to read it. I really enjoyed it, and felt that it was very strong for a debut, but there were some parts that felt slightly off to me, which is why I bumped my rating down a bit.

While I acknowledge that, because the characters are so young and immature, the relationship is meant to feel young and immature (i.e., when
Sam moves out to Kingston for his pre-college workshop and doesn't tell Percy/asks Percy to set boundaries, and Percy gets upset with Sam
, or when
Sam asks Percy to marry him at eighteen mf years old???
), some things the characters did, especially in the parts when they were adults, felt too immature for me to handle. The "twist" at the end of this was
that she CHEATS ON HIM WITH HIS BROTHER???
, and I almost put the book down when I read that part, lmao. And the end felt like, very rushed and I wanted so much more from them (outside of the sweet little epilogue, which made me cry), but overall, this was a very enjoyable second chance, summer romance, and I would recommend it if you're looking for a quick read that'll keep you up reading it because you want to know what happens so badly.
