Not terribly well written and I'm not sure why we needed a Christianity subplot but I like the concept of kids solving mysteries in historical periods.

Solid J historical mystery. For kids who like their books smart and detailed, with excellent historical context. So, um, a bit of a limited audience.

when I say this series is my roman empire I need you to understand I am deadly serious.

rereading because the whole series slapped when I was wee, and it still slaps in my mid-20s

It was cute. Not really worth reading the rest of the series but I loved the Roman Mythology.

I'd forgotten how excruciatingly obvious the solution to the central mystery is, but I also found myself discovering subtext I completely missed as a humble 9 year old reading it for the first time, which I consider a pretty even trade off.

I loved this book a lot but there were points wear I wanted to skip a paragaph or a sentence becuse it made no sense to the story at that moment or at all in the story. But I enjoyed it becuase included the problems of all four children and how they all fitted together to make one big problem: who was the thief of Ostia? When the answer becomes clear it was obvious and you feel like a big idiot for not realizing it earlier. So the clues were there and it was kind of a game and a book at the same time and the author's desciptions were so spot on you really got a movie in your head from reading the book which is veyr enjoyable.

Well, The Thieves of Ostia (The Roman Mysteries #1) by Caroline Lawrence was a fun little adventure. I wish I'd read this back when it was brand new. I'm sure I would have loved it even more. I'm glad glad I decided to take all of the recommendations I've gotten for this over the years even if I got to it about 23 years after its release. I think I'll have to continue this MG series.

3.5 stars. The writing is simple but some of the scenes are surprisingly gruesome. Makes it hard for me to decide what age is appropriate.
