Slow start for me with this one, but then I became invested in it and couldn't put it down.

Insiktsfullt, intelligent.

#BOTNS-bingoruta: 'A dark, upsetting, or sad book'. (Mörkare än såhär kan jag inte gå.)

A very strong start - a powerful depiction of the Yugoslavian exile experience, infused with a hefty dose of Yugonostalgia, and exploring the trauma of language and the language of trauma - but, as the story progresses, it loses momentum, and the ending is implausible.

The name of the book is explained in the first pages of the book as being related to that of a BDSM shop immigrants liked to work at because it was well-paid, but the place does not play a significant role in the novel (it is only mentioned in passing that three characters work there).

This book took me a long time to read, I just couldn't get into it. I didn't care for any of the characters and this just wasn't my kind of read. There were some really beautiful passages, but not enough to sustain me. It did make me realize that I have a lot to learn about the history of this area of the world.
