It took me about 1/2 way through this book to appreciate it, then I just sped through to the end.
The problem I had was that the person who recommended it to me simply described it as "quirky" and unfortunately, my definition of quirky was something different, out of the ordinary combined with perhaps whimsy and off-beat humour. So I was expecting this to be funny and I didn't find it to be so.
It's a story told from an unnamed child's perspective about the mental illness and deterioration of his mother with the unstinting support of his father. Did the mother do "quirky" things? Certainly. But her actions were always tinged with madness that ended up consuming her. I found it all moving and just so sad. Once I got over my expectation of "funny" I was able to appreciate the narrative and the writing.
It's a brilliant read.
