The translation was the problem. But overall alright.

The first two chapters are real tearjerkers. Alongside with the protagonist, this lightnovel will guide the readers back to the path of humanity. Well, that could be an overstatement, but nonetheless, it could help one probe and scrutinize into one's deeply-rooted version of living and understanding of held beliefs and emotional attachments. Save the love story in the backseat, though it could not be neglected that it played a vital role for her search for meaning.

4.5/5 stars.

This is fan translated version of the first Violet Evergarden book. If you wish to read it you can search "dennou-translations" in tumblr.

I enjoyed the first book much more than the anime. Although at some parts the translation wasn't as good as a professional one would be, the person (or people) who translated it did a very good job.

i really liked this! the translation i read was somewhat clunky, but the feelings the author wanted to get across remained intact. a very beautiful collection of stories which i'm looking forward to continuing with :)

I read this wanting more after having watched the anime (which I adored). So far the first volume hasn’t quite given me the same feeling. The first half of the book is mainly a collection of short stories which aren’t my favorite but are interesting enough. They do bring out the same sentimental feelings in me as the anime. However in the anime they are more impactful because they aide in Violet’s development whereas here she takes a background seat making it harder to connect with her as a character. The last chapter which makes up the second half of the book was my favorite. I enjoyed how it allowed a more intimate look into Gilbert’s emotions. It was here that I finally felt able to connect to the characters. I will read the second volume because I feel there will be more story development, but the first volume was certainly not my favorite book ever.
