I found it hard to get into this book. The tale is a slow plodding narrative that just didn’t speak to me. It’s setting and time era didn’t put me off in any way. It just wasn’t all that interesting to read and I had to push myself to finish.

Il dottor Hesselius cercherà di far chiarezza su questi ricorrenti episodi soprannaturali, seguendo con attenzione il cambiamento nel carattere e nella personalità di Jennings, che in un tumultuoso crescendo compierà il suo atto finale spinto proprio da quella diabolica apparizione. The part where Jennings tells of his peculiar incident is the only interesting part of this story.

The writings style was definitely not my type, and the story dragged out a lot. I was really bored during most of it. It's supposedly a horror story where a doctor tells in a series of letters the story of one of the cases he attempted to solve of a man suffering from hallucinations and connecting it to religion.

I like the idea but it was really boring!

Vaya que esta sí fue una grata sorpresa. Es apenas un relato corto con temática de horror y misterio. Por su estilo y la manera en que está narrado (un secretario transcribiendo apuntes) me recordó un tanto a Sherlock Holmes, aunque por las fechas de publicación sería si acaso un antecedente. La diferencia principal es que su protagonista, el alemán Dr. Hesselius, más que al crimen se concentra al estudio de la "medicina metafísica" y sus casos se centran más en espíritu y lo paranormal. De este libro trata de un reverendo y ciertas afecciones que le afectan.

El estilo hace que quedes atrapado desde el inicio, y que sea realmente difícil dejar de leer. La atmósfera y los sentimientos lo hacen un buen libro para la temporada de terror -si eres muy asustadizo y quieres algo que te ponga en ambiente sin privarte del sueño-.
