It's a high 4 stars from me but just barely missed the 5
This is a book in 3 parts. The first is what synopsis sells, online voyeurs, but furthermore the general lack of privacy in the digital age. The second, intertwined, is a very good stalker story. Lastly, this book is at it's core about a really fucking weird couple and I love it for that. All three aspects of the story are executed well enough that they each could have been their own book, I was gripped,I was enthralled
A particular selling point of the book for me was the portrayal of New Zealand. I've loved that country all my life but never yearned for it as much as listening to the descriptions from this book. The author does a great job immersing you and making the world feel rich and realistic. The MC's husband is Maori along with a few other characters which also felt refreshing. I think the atmosphere really lent itself to this story feeling robust and fresh
The main thing preventing this from being a five star is the ending. I don't think it's a bad ending even, I actually think it's kind of brave and very unique, but I think the emotional impact just didn't quite stick in the way it needed to be a perfect book for me. These freaks deserve each other and I love that, I just needed a bit more resonance to the decisions they made.
I also wish there were a thesis statement to the internet privacy aspect which is what really propelled the story. Don't put shit online my guys, nothing good can come of you letting a fitness app track your location. I don't even use social media and yet I still want to scrub myself from the internet after this

The Last Guests is the 3rd book of J.P's that I have read in a matter of months and it did not disappoint. π
True to J.P's writing style, Lina and Cain are well developed and highly flawed characters with plenty of secrets. The story touches on a number of sensitive topics such as financial struggles, PTSD, addiction and infertility.
The addition of the subchapters depicting the Peephole live streams really heightened the voyeuristic elements and ramped up the suspense to a whole other level.
The plausibility behind the premise of this story is what made it super creepy and eerie for me. The idea of being watched during your most private and vulnerable moments... π± Ahhh gosh, it just makes my skin crawl because this kind of thing is likely happening somewhere in the world right now. I think it's going to be a while before I book a trip in someone's vacay home.
If you're in the mood for a twisty thriller that will make you ask yourself just how far you would be willing to go to attain the life you've always wanted? Then The Last Guests is a must.
Also, shoutout to J.P for that "Tell Me Lies" easter egg cleverly included on page 290 ππ. I see what you did there π
