I'm not sure if it was just the narrator, but this is quite a dull story overall. The main character doesn't really have enough vivacity to be a good protagonist, she just lets everything happen to her.

This was a simple little book but very effective! For a first novel it is well done. I didn’t find it nearly as compelling as The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but that is due to the simplicity of the plot, not to a lack of good writing. The simplicity of the conflict makes it all the more believable.

An interesting novel giving an outlook of governess's life in the 19th century - based on Anne Brontë's own experience

Of Anne Brontë's two novels, this one is my least favorite. While I appreciate the more realistic portrayal of a governess's life, something is lacking in the book. It could be the short length, the unbearable nature of the main character's employers, or perhaps the relationship with the love interest, which feels quite out of nowhere and not well thought out. Overall, it just doesn’t resonate with me. I'm glad the story ends on a positive note for the main character, although the proposal felt like it was done out of "last-ditch effort" instead of some sweeping romance. Maybe that's the point, but I don't like it.
