What a brilliant little gem of a book!

What Dick King-Smith did so well (among other things) was to imbue his animal characters with wants and needs that were of crucial importance to them, even if a human might have found them small. Max's desire to cross the road takes him on a hedgehog-hero's quest, and in his moment of triumph, it feels like as big a victory as St. George slaying the dragon, or Luke Skywalker defeating the Emperor. That's no small feat for an author, and King-Smith handles it perfectly.

The characters too are lovely -- not just Max, but his somewhat old-fashioned Pa, his loving, sometimes fretful Ma, and especially the jovial Uncle B. It's really impressive how, in such a short book, King-Smith made me feel like I knew and loved them all.

A lovely tale, and one that I highly recommend!

A cute story about a hedgehog that finds a safe way to cross the street. Even if it's a story for children, I found it nice and funny.

I just love this book. I first read this in junior school and loved it back then, but I forgot about it until I went Wikipedia spelunking and stumbled upon the entry for it! I had to get it and have a reread, and I'm glad I did. It's such a sweet innocent adventure story. A lovley palate cleanser.

Very short little animal story. Courage. Bravery. In a hedgehog, no less.

You go, Max. Hedgehogs are getting killed by the dozens crossing the road, but humans seem to do it without killing themselves...how do humans do it? Max is off to find out how and share the secrets with his fellow hedgehogs.
