I had such high hopes for this book. I was so sure I'd like it, because the concept seemed to be right up my alley. Creepy, gothic and with mermaids! But I just can't get into it, and it makes me so sad.
It might've been a me issue, but I just don't understand the foundation of the story. I've been so confused about the supposed time period this takes place in. The magical elements surprised and confused me, because I'd kind of thought there wouldn't really be any besides the mermaids but then there's corpsewights and witches?
I'm also having a hard time with the writing style, it's really tough for me to get through. There's just enough payoff for me to continue.

Maybe some kind of formatting is getting lost in the audio version, but the story jumps around from one sentence to the next and it's jarring as hell. It hasn't got enough going for it otherwise to be worth the effort.

I can't really believe I didn't read anything by Angela Slatter before. I want to fix that now. She writes dark fairytale like stories that fullfill my cravings. This one is deeply feminist and a joy to read. Both, characters and athmosphere were a delight and I'd spend a lot more pages with this characters.
Miren has lived a sort of a sheltered live with her grandparents as she was told her parents died when she was a baby. But their state is crumbling and what once was a great fortune is now loosing all the grandeour so wen her grandad dies, her grandma tries to sell her to a marriage of convinience to her cousin. But Miren doesn't want to be ill treated and she flees after discovering something about her parents.
At times it feels like a fairy tale, at others a gothic romance but the combination is so unique you are compelled to keep reading. I enjoyed it so much!

I felt let down with the lack of mystical fairytale elements. With the bio I was hoping for something more related to mythical creature lore and spooky creatures. Instead it felt badly paced stumbling from one thing to the next without enough things to explain why. It felt like there was something missing from the plot like a bigger depth of history to it.
