our girl is the last in line of a magical family that made a cursed bargain with the sea; and all she wants is to escape from the shitty rich guy her grandmother has selected for her to marry. so off she goes on her own, into the wide world, trying to find pockets of kindness and caring.

Started off a little slow as it introduced Hob's Hollow and the O'Malley family. Once we got into Miren's point of view I got sucked in. About family and magic and bargains. About finding your own path. Miren is a strong woman and had to make a lot of hard decisions on her journey. Very satisfying conclusion.
As this is set in the world of A.G. Slatter's previous tales, I will have to read more of her work. I loved all the stories from the O'Malley's book of tales. Added a lot of rich lore.

I made it through this book because of the narrator. The story was slow and it didn't seem to go anywhere. There are a few compelling sections, but they are few and far between. If you are looking for a book that has very little action and a protagonist that is almost always underestimated with a handful of magic this is for you.

This book was a suuuuper slow burn in the beginning and the last like 100 pages is where the action was. Meh, it was ok. Wouldn’t read again though

This book is described as a fairy-tale gothic. I’ve finished the book and I can’t explain what a fairy-tale gothic is. Interesting creatures: mermaids, a witch, kelpie, shape-changer, and mechanical entertainer add a devil’s deal and a weird and interesting tale is spun.
