Very strange. The plot was NOT what I was expecting, and I feel like there were plot holes regarding DNA and gender. I tuned out for several sections - not sure whether it was the prose or the narration. The narrator was quite unlike most narrators I'm accustomed to. Not bad, just heavily accented English that required a lot of my attention. Very animated with great voices.
I did not expect to like this as much as I did since my experience with Bear so far hasn't been good. Perhaps I just like her short stories more? Because this one definitely did work. Such a nice world building. I would definitely not mind reading more in this world!
(Also, on the way I was very much upset about an astronomical fact being wrong - I should have trusted the author more, it *was* all planned out and properly researched. Much kudos to the author and shame on me.)

I can't give this an honest review because I've been reading it so sporadically. But it was good enough that I'll give it another chance sometime in the future
A clever short story/novella with great worldbuilding and a fun murder mystery. This sci-fi story also deals with communication, family relationships, and genetic engineering in thought-provoking ways. I think my major complaint was that it felt too short and some of the plot ideas and characters didn't get quite enough time. Hopefully Book 2+ pads out the live of Sub-Inspector Ferron and Friends more!

It was amusing. Quick short story. I like the fact that it had an Indian woman voicing an Indian woman and it was an interesting little story. I would have preferred to have more contact with Chairman Miao But it didn't suck.

I love this tour of the future; we get good glimpses of an interesting and plausible world. I want to read more about it.
The story itself is just a quick detective yarn.

My first by this author. An enjoyable murder mystery set in an interesting world, a futuristic India. I'd like to read more about these characters, and I'll likely read more of Ms. Bear's work in the future.
