I'm an avid Jenny Holiday fan and while I had not read the first in the kind-of-series, this book was a perfect stand alone. The characters were reflective and realistic (in the sense that any famous musician story is). 

The end did feel a bit rushed and shoved into the last 40 pages, but you don't often get a male/male romance that is this well written and sits at over 300 pages. Totally worth the read!
