3.5 I enjoy these kind of books, but I always would rather have the amount of stories cut down so you can dive deeper in the stories and give them the attention that was needed as some of them felt like they needed more or something was missing. It all felt very surface level at times.

Parts of this book are shocking, with the number of cases involving euthanasia, which isn’t a thing in the U.S. but the stories highlight two things for me. One, doctors need to listen more closely to their patients (though the way health care is structured now, that seems impossible). Two, end-of-life decisions are incredibly complex and extremely personal. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

This book made a huge impression on me. It is very special to read all the different stories from people in healthcare. It is nice to read that there are so many people who learn a very wise lesson from even the most terrible experiences. I think it's admirable that people recognize their mistakes and turn a patient into a lesson instead of seeing it as a failure that could even discourage them.

The book is full of impressive stories and I would prefer to discuss them all one by one. I hope there will be more columns or books with these kinds of stories, because there are extremely beautiful and sad stories with great life lessons. Hopefully there will be another book like this!

Poignant and oftentimes heart-breaking... However, it was a little bit triggering because of how much it talked of the death of a cancer patient (being myself someone who's had cancer and still dealing with its after-effects on my life). Wasn't expecting this to be so much a downer with patients dying in almost all the stories - was under the impression it would be more about hope and what doctors took away from their interactions with patients. In that sense, it felt very shallow (the stories were just so short, and I get it, given they were first in newspaper column format) but there was so much scope there, and again, all of them seemed to end on a sense of doom and doldrums...
Went in thinking this would be a hopeful kind of book - it's anything but, really, so please beware if that's what you also think you'll be getting
