The narrator of the book, Jeremy, has a close relationship with his in-laws and interviews them over the years. He learns about their former lives as communists and their love for each other culminating with their separation. I liked the premise of the book, but it lost me a little bit toward the end.

Strong and occasionally poignant writing, but the book tries to touch on too many themes to really drive any home. I liked it best as a story about a failed marriage where two people loved each other deeply but refused to understand one another at all.

The classic dilemma of society versus the individual, personified. Both intimate and cogitative; but there was a sense of deliberate construction of the narrative, which I found distancing.

Not my favourite McEwan.
