The first book in a long time that I just couldn‘t put down. I had to read it in a day and I was close to tears basically the whole time. As always, Taylor Jenkins Reid has this way of portraying characters and their relationships in such a realistic way that you cannot help but feel with them. With this books she shows how complex grieve can be and how it influences the relationships with the people still living.

Knowing this is TJR’s first novel makes me impressed by the quality of the writing and story-telling. Even in her debut, Reid is able to tell a story unlike others. She makes the mundane parts of life feel like something worth reading and the diabolical parts of life relatable. This book made me ugly cry several times. It was a good love story about found family and building a life that you’re proud of despite shitty circumstances.

Forever, Interrupted by Taylor Jenkins Reid tells the story of the supernova relationship of Ben, a graphic designer, and Elsie, a librarian.

They meet by chance on New Years Day at a pizzeria after Elsie decides to go and collect hers rather than having it delivered and this meeting determines their lives for the next 6 months. They have a whirlwind romance and elope in May, without his Mum or her parents in attendance. Nine days after they marry, Ben dies after a collision with a car whilst cycling to the store to get Elsie her favourite cereal.

The narrative alternates between the before and the after, over a period of one year, tackling head on the grieving and healing of Elsie, with the support of her best friend Ana, and Susan, the mother in law she never met until after Ben's death. 

I am not normally a fan of books which have duelling timelines but for this story it worked and I was able to follow it through.  

I owned a copy of this book and listened to it on Borrowbox. I read this for prompt "Be Mine, Valentine" for the 52 Book Club mini challenge February 2024.

God. If I could recommend this to anyone I ever knew, it would literally never be enough. If I thought The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was good I was FLOORED by this book. The exploration on loss and grief centered around women and connection through tragedy. I wish I could reread this for the first time again. Chapter 60 on was just waterworks and sobbing.

God, this book had me sobbing from beginning to end yet I never wanted the story to finish. The story of loss and mourning while trying to move on with your life had me in shambles bc I could never imagine the pain of losing the person you love, so permanently after finally getting your HEA. TJR has such a way with words and this has been proven in her other novels time and time again, so I can’t wait to read her other works (especially since I need to knock down my tbr) and have my heart broken and repaired all over again.

A beautifully told story of love that ended too soon.  It isn't as good as her later books, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo or Daisy Jones and the Six.

this book broke my heart. i really liked the complex exploration of grief. taylor jenkins reid remains my favourite author. i’ve read all of her books except After I Do and im so excited to read it!
