Mini-review: Desires of the Dead RATING: 2 stars.

I think it's one of those "it's not you, it's me" cases. Violet didn't seem to have that much personality for much of the book. And the mystery was kind of... weak. I don't know, I just didn't enjoy this one as much as I thought I would. I've read the first book a while ago and I remember I really liked the chemistry and the relationship between Violet and Jay, but in this second book... not so much.

Desires of the Dead had the same intriguing pull that grabbed my attention as did The Body Finder, but unfortunately, this time, the mystery part was nowhere near as interesting--the summary gave most of it away. Also, Violet seemed pretty dumb/impulsive to me in this book; she just wandered off, repeatedly, into deserted areas after feeling pulls or seeing echos.

No no to this book. Just no. Did I just read an entire book about an overly emotional teenager who makes STUPID decisions, never learns from them and acts like no one is supporting her? Yes, Yes I did **bangs head against desk** seriously if Jay is supposed to be her freaking soulmate and she can’t confide in HIM, I have no faith in Violet. Just kill her off now.

The most interesting character in the entire series: Rafe. Am I rooting for a love triangle? I guess so!! Or Jay needs to get interesting quickly because I am losing interest.

I am definitely enjoying this series, a very interesting and different take on the paranormal. Violet, senses dead bodies, dead bodies that need to be put to rest, The only problem is violent as not always smart about this. I think at least three times in this book, she was out in the middle of the night, looking for dead bodies, all by herself! Not a very smart move, but I guess she is a teenager. The Mistry in the story was a bit predictable, but there was a bit of a twist in the end. I'm curious to see where this goes with her working with others, and using her gifts, and what is this other guy's gift? The love story in this book is very secondary, but I still find it very charming, and very real. I will definitely be finishing this series.

I am a huge fan of The Body Finder, so when I got my hands on the sequel (thanks to my crazy awesome friend James from Book Chic) I was beyond excited! It has been a while since I read The Body Finder, but I did remember being fond of Jay and Violet and this book just reaffirmed my love for the two of them. They are the sweetest couple and I adore their best friend turned love story.

While the relationship in this story is beautiful, I think the mystery that surrounds Violet’s life is just as appealing. In the previous book you get a sneak peak into the mind of the killer and that same concept bled over into Desires of the Dead. It is fascinating to get a peak into the mind of a such troubled soul and it really adds depth to the story when you get so many different vantage points.

The last hundred or so pages of this book are really intense. You are racing to try and reveal all the secrets behind the mystery but at the same time you don’t want to miss the details along the way. Kimberly does a fantastic job of building the plot and while there were some things I knew where coming, but there was one point at the end where I was taken completely by surprise. Which of course is awesome, because a good shocking revelation here and there always keeps me on my toes.

I am hoping we are not done with this world because there are still quite a few unanswered questions that I would like to see explored further, but I am still happy with the way this book ended. Jay and Violet continue to draw me into their world and I love watching their relationship develop. They are so sweet and they are a couple I will always be rooting for.

If you have not checked out this series yet, you really need to. There is suspense, romance, paranormal activity and plenty of mystery to keep you interested. I am looking forward to whatever Kimberly Derting comes out with next!
