The plot was good, but oh were there clichés.  We have a veteran detective, grizzled with a dark past/secret. We have his young female new to the ranks partner, who to be fair was a well developed character.

All in all this was a regular read, nothing spectacularly bad or good about it, just average.

It was good. A good twist at the end. A little wordy and long at times and I had to give it a little break and come back to it. But once it started to get intense, I was totally absorbed.

I’ll start with the end - breathtakingly tense. Stakes are high, and the book made it very clear just how brutal this end could be.
The book has many red herrings which are obvious, but at the same time, they make you wonder….
The characters are great - good ol’ slightly grumpy, serious older detective that is kind of morally grey, partnered up with younger woman, tough and dying to prove herself. Despite the somewhat obvious (and effective) trope, the characters are well rounded and with hidden depths. It will be great seeing their partnership grow in the series.
Knocked down one star because I feel like we didn’t need all of the POV shifting constantly - Byrne and Balzano’s, the killer’s, plus the reporter, and sometimes the victims. It slows down the pace of the book.

It had so much potential and then the ending is like the author forgot what book he was writing.

He did have info on faith.  Jabbed at Vatican 2 Catholics being poorly catechized.  It gets into some detail of the rosary and the meditative practices often overlooked or skipped by many Catholics.

This is one of ny favourite books ever. I love the dynanmic between the detectives but it also has a really well driven plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The crimes themselves are very dark and graphic in places which some may not like (I think it adds to the tension) but it fits well with the story and isn't gratuitous. I go back to this series time and time again but this one will probably always be my favourite!
