Well this book was certainly interesting. Bought it on a whim on Amazon because the plot/idea looked interesting. Well, it certainly was a thing.
Short version, guy's life is terrible and nearly kills himself. Find a kitten who needs his help. Fast forward a few years later and he has a cat rescue. He inadvertently saves Bast, the goddess and she rewards him by teleporting him into a world similar to ours only instead of regular animals, all animals are anthro. However, he's the only one who can speak animal.
There's not TOO TOO much to say about this one, other than there's smut. like a LOTTTTTT of smut. i'd say a good 1/3 of the book is smut. Once you get past that though, i actually found the plot to be kind of interesting. essentially they're little vignettes about him finding an animal in a bad situation like an abused queen bee, an injured pigeon, and he rescues them and takes care of them. He teams up with a vet and an animal welfare agent and gets his new business rolling.
Of course though that leaves the question of the kitties. Well that's where the smut comes in. Honestly, the thing i probably liked the least about the book were the actual cats. They all kind of just acted kind of...mentally immature and didn't really have much of a personality to speak of. While characters like hope the bird, lucy the bee, and norma the cow all had distinct, adult personalities, the cats were just kind of a weird...hodgepodge of immaturity and after a while i kind of got tired of them. (also they all mixed together to the point that i kind of forgot who was who)
If i had to have ONE major complaint though, it was the descriptions. Like, i don't know what it was about this author, but he was not very good at describing what these anthro creatures looked like and he wasn't very consistent. Like one moment he'd be saying that a creature looked like an upright cat, and the next how it looked like a human with dog ears. Like, he really needed to go back and describe these things better. Honestly, when it came to the cats, i was just going off the cover because the descriptions didn't really help at all. If i were the author, i'd go back and do some editing and fix up some of the descriptions.
When it comes to our main character Kevin..he's FINE but I do question some of his choices. Like, he has a cat rescue and yet, during the years of running it, he never ONCE got any of his cats fixed? that's kind of weird. like normally when you take in animals that's one of the first things you do for many reasons including medical. and it's not like doing so breaks the bank either. So not sure what that was about.
My favorite characters were probably Lucy, Norma, and Hope as they actually had some good characterization, were interesting, and were fun. Ironically i could have done without the cats.
All in all, the story was fine, it read pretty fast, and i heard there's like a side-story/sequel for christmas or something? I mean, i'd probably read it. See where this story is going. I mean, it's not one of those where i want to jump into it IMMEDIATELY but maybe in the future.
