Absolute perfection. The frame narrative of this being a historical legend cross-examined by multiple authors comes together well here, with many elaborations and criticisms of various historians which adds a depth to the characters and plot that is not present in the OVA. This book is Oskar von Reuenthal and Wolfgang Mittermeyer's book. If you love these characters (as you should) then this will easily be one of the best books in the series with an unbelievably perfect ending that serves as a sort of dark reflection of the tragedies of a previous novel.

I love these so much.
Yes, I watched the OVA; none of the plot is a surprise. However, Tanaka's attention to the mental states of his characters isn't something the anime can capture completely, and the frame historical-criticism mechanic provides so much more depth to the story.
