Two brothers head toward a spot where the third brother is lying dead from dehydration in the middle of their cattle-raising property in the Australian outback where vast lands make both loneliness and relationships more intense.

This was my second attempt at this book. I’m glad I tried again. The other creates powerful characters that are complex and interesting. She paints Australia in beautiful colors. I was questioning the whole time, and wondering about who might have done what.

This was the first book of Jane Harper's that I have read. I was immediately captivated and did not want to put it down. The author developed the characters well and the integrity of those traits were maintained throughout the book. One thing that struck me was the level of honesty the main character presented with throughout. As a reader, I trusted this perspective. I know that often times, to create drama and suspense, characters withhold information and communication gets misconstrued. I know this is a human behavior, but it was refreshing that the author held true to the character. It also had it's twist and turns and I was eagerly turning the pages. I look forward to reading more from the author.

Another fantastic book by Harper. Her writing is so evocative, it makes me feel like I've been to the outback. I loved all the twists and turns and family drama. Satisfying ending too.

Just brilliant. I don't know how this author slipped by me but if her other books are nearly as strong as this novel then she deserves all the praise and more. The development of characters and relationships is honestly unmatched in anything I can recall in recent history. The depth of the region and the pace are just... brilliant.
I can't say too much without spoiling some of the experience but If it were not apparant, I highly recommend this book and will definately be seeking out more from this author.

A most enjoyable book! A suspenseful thriller that reveals itself and its characters page by page, like peeling the layers off an onion. But without the tears.
Throughout the story we chip away at each member of the Bright family, who they are, or who they want everyone to think they are. Learning how the past has shaped the present, mixed with the extreme and harsh setting of the Australian outback it made for an interesting story. Where the heat and environment has a fundamental effect on how people complete day to day activities. Having never read any books previously set in the outback I found every fact about the everyday routines absorbing.
A well paced read, with fascinating characters and setting. There was one part to the storyline I anticipated but for all the wrong reasons. Will very happily seek out other books by Jane Harper to read. Oh, I would never want to live there, far to hot for me
