Short and rather shallow. Boy meets girl, girl plays hard to get, boy afraid to lose girl to ghost, boy and girl solve ghost's problem by being guided by enigmatic cat. I hope the other Kay Hooper books are better cause this one was awful. It was like a romance writer was attempting something scary, tripped at the starting line and then decided WTH just go with romance and add a ghost. The characters weren't that developed and the plot very weak, if there was a plot. To top off this mess, everything was so damn convenient. Marc was conveniently a criminal defense attorney, clues to solve the mystery of the ghost were conveniently dropped in their laps via the cat. Sad to say I doubt I'll read any more of Kay Hooper's work until one of them conveniently drops into my lap. It was one of those books where the cover was better than the book.

I mainly read mystery and don't like romance but I did like this book. I like this writers style and really wish the book had more of the mystery and less of the romance. I thought it was kinda funny that this ghost seemed to want her to do something and was getting impatient but for most of the book the guy was trying to get into the girl's pants and she was pushing him away but at the same time wanting him. Meanwhile, the ghost can't really do anything but mime at her to hurry up and keep moving a key around to get her attention. The cat part was very interesting and kinda funny and left me wishing I wasn't allergic to them.
So the bulk of the book, which is short, is about the relationship of the two main characters and the ghost part is short of a backdrop. Now that I've finished it I find myself wondering about things that were left dangling. Like, I wish I could have read about them working on her father's case, and what was up with the old woman having the same hair and eye color as Josie and asking if they were related? I mean, it is pretty odd for anyone to have red hair and "violet eyes" and then she meets this old woman who had the same hair and eye color (at least when she was younger.) It almost feels like I am missing the other half of the book.
I do have to say though, if I came across another book by this author I'd be tempted to read it since her romance writing isn't too "Gag me with a spoon man."

Originally published in 1994 this is a reprint following the success of her newer fiction.
Josie Douglas came to live in an isolated country cottage ostensibly to write a novel, in reality she has a mystery to solve. Her landlord is Marc Westbrook, a gorgeous lawyer recovering from a car accident. The two of them are attracted from the start with some meddling from Pendragon the cat. When a ghost enters the equation they are both sidetracked into investigating the death of his grand-uncle.
I enjoyed the read, the characters were quite a lot of fun and Pendragon was a lot of fun.

It wasn't a great book but I did enjoy it, it was a fast easy read that got me out of a slump, and I'd be willing to read the author again for sure.
There's a close quarters romance and cat that seems to be a little too intelligent, but is not the main focus of the story.
The main plot is Josie is being haunted by the ancestor of the man she's (definitely not) falling for, and she is determined to figure out why this is happening now when it's been established the house has never been haunted before.
The main obstacle between the couple and their happy ending is Josie has learned that trusting and relying on people is a good way to get hurt after her father was accused of a heinous crime and punished for it by the public.
This does lead to moments when it appears that the male MC is pushing her into a relationship, however, we are generally in her pov and aware of the fact that it's not unwanted attention.
This could be triggering for some though.
The female MC is that cliche super rare thin, red haired, violet eyed beauty that is somehow inexperienced and unaware of her own appeal, so just be ready if you decide to read it (again it was a good book)

The cat POV was fun, but the book wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I rarely look up publication dates but did on this one. Some of the language is dated. Definitely writen in the early 90s

The only character I actually liked was the black cat, Pendragon. The “hero” was a toxic and aggressive jerk who couldn’t take no for an answer and basically bullied the heroine into being with him. Oh, and he repeated mansplained her own career to her (she’s an author) and told her how she was supposed to feel and act about her own job. I cannot

I love Pendragon, the perfect character!! I listened to this at work since it was free and available on Libby.
With that being said, it was better then I expected. It was fast paces, to the point and didn't leave anything open at the end. I enjoyed the book and I've been working my way through other books by this author.
