Mark Morris' Forever Autumn could actually be an episode of Doctor Who. In fact, it's everything a Halloween Special should be, that holiday's version of The Christmas Invasion. Halloween decorations and costumes come to life in a New England town (with a link to the Carrionites!) in this Spooktoberfest story, which has a pretty effective atmosphere, some interesting set pieces, and charming interplay between the Doctor and Martha. Oddly, it's the first of these novels to further the so-called "Gay Agenda" by featuring a gay character. Notable for these books, which are on the whole, completely lacking in "kissy stuff".

For whatever reason this one just didn't really grab me. I think I was probably expecting it to be more Halloween focused and while there was some stuff in there it was more in the background most of the time. Maybe there was more Halloween stuff in the print version but the audio I thought was just okay. Definitely not one of the better Doctor Who novelizations for me.

A great Halloween story! Scary enough that it got my heart pumping, but still with that Doctor Who magic that gives me a sense of calm. I felt that the author did a great job capturing Martha but only a meh job capturing the 10th Doctor. Overall a very enjoyable read.

I told a friend of mine I was reading this and he asked me if it was good, or just upgraded fanfiction. The answer? I wouldn't call it upgraded. I have read better fanfiction (though not for Dr. Who)than this. That's not to say the book was BAD, exactly, but compared to the show it is based off of, it falls flat. I sympathize with the author. Both Chris Eccleston and David Tennant play the Doctor with an almost feverish pitch - to capture that on paper would better writers than this. The real problem is that Morris does no better in developing the original character. The language is stilted, and the characters are stiff and false. The extensive discussion of one character's nose (and its relative cuteness) is a perfect example.
As is always the danger with novelizations, the book simply doesn't ring true. It is a flat imitation. Morris tries, and I'm sure he's an able writer on his own, but his Doctor lacks the energy of the real deal.

Like most Doctor Who tie-in novels, don't expect it to deliver massive things. However, also like most novels it was an entertaining read over the course of an afternoon, adding more story to a Universe I thoroughly enjoy

This is one of my fav books that I've listened to for Doctor Who. I would have liked to see this one as an episode.

I listened to this as an audiobook.
Forever Autumn, as can be seen by the cover, is a Halloween story. I did wish I had kept it to Halloween, but I'm going through the books in publication order, and this was next.
The story itself reflects the mood of Halloween very well. There are cats, bats, a weird tree, fog, all the things that make Halloween a fun time. At times, it was genuinely frightening as well.
Will Thorpe reads the story, who played Toby Zed in "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit". He does a great job of it, and does justice to the characters.
I recommend reading it for Halloween, and then the atmosphere will be perfect.

This was a real blast from the past with an adventure from the 10th Doctor and Martha Jones. I read this book on Halloween and it was a perfect little spooky read for the season. I loved this book and all the sass and silliness from Martha and the Doc, with a great story and full of the excitement of the show. The writer caught the characters perfectly and lead us through a spooky story fitting for Halloween filled with plenty of spooky vibes. Great little read!

I wasn't expecting a lot from this book, although I am a fan of doctor who I figured it would be a little childish with a predictable storyline which would quickly get boring. However I was definitely surprised!
In this book we follow The Doctor and Martha as they land in the town of Blackwood Falls - a place which lives for Halloween. This year however Halloween will become a little too real for the inhabitants of this small little town. A magical book is discovered buried under the roots of an incredibly old tree and when the children who discover it decide to read it many problems occur.
This book reminded me a lot of Hocus Pocus but with aliens not witches. A book starts all this mess and in the end the whole town is in danger because of a few kids messing around. Therefore if you liked that film then you will probably like this book as they have a lot of similar themes.
It is an incredibly short book and can easily be read in one sitting, as it is so short the story does progress rapidly and so would be really good for a readathon. The story wasn't just about The Doctor which makes a nice change from the usual episodes, Martha was left on her own a bit more so we got to see a lot more of her character and how she reacts in different circumstances.
Although this book is aimed at young teens there were some scenes which I found particularly atmospheric, there were even some parts which creeped me out! (Be warned if you don't like clowns there is a scene which may terrify you - think IT by Stephen King but for teens). The ending however had be completely fooled which was quite unexpected because I hadn't anticipated much from this book so to be completely fooled at the end is something of an achievement.
Overall I would recommend this book, it is short and definitely a to be read if you like the TV show or Hocus Pocus. Don't just disregard it because it is more aimed at children, you might find yourself presently surprised like I was! Give it a go (you'll only lose a day's worth of reading max).
