Loved his memoirs. All of them. And his debut in fiction, The Buzzing, I thought was quirky and phenomenal. Ever since that first novel I’ve found the rest of his books borderline poor. They seem to usually revolve around some odd story in reality or from history but then lack substance. They just seem to meander. For instance, this story revolves around an odd murder case in Wisconsin and follows the actions of the county sheriff. And since he’s inexperienced in this sort of thing he doesn’t really know how to investigate it and instead just kind of wanders around and interviews different characters. The reader keeps waiting for the big breakthrough. Will the sheriff demonstrate some particle of genius? No. And sadly that’s how the story ends with nothing much happening. The book got one extra star for having very realistic dialogue. My relatives from Wisconsin really do speak this way.
