An odd book that had the air of a fairy tale - the idea of the isolated house, the quiet woman living there, the big, bad mayor, the mysterious visitor (like a handsome prince), a house full of children living on scraps. The time flitted around projecting into the future giving an insight into a more real life ahead for the protagonists. But I never felt truly invested in any of the characters and wondered if something had been lost in translation.

This was a somewhat autobiographical historical fiction based on the author’s own family in WWI Austria, and I enjoyed it. I liked the themes of love, family, and trust that were touched on throughout, but the writing jumped around a bit and that was my main issue with it.

This was a random pick off of the shelf. The characters were sweet and the story idea was not bad but it was not executed well. Was there a plot? Not really.
