There were parts of this book that I absolutely loved and other bits that I had to force myself through. Sometimes things were just too slow for my taste, but I expected that when I picked up this book. My biggest disappointment was that none of the baked goods sounded as delicious as the cinnamon roll from Legends & Lattes. There was a lot of baked goods mentioned but nothing was described in the way that pushed me to go on a quest for a cinnamon roll that could satisfy me.

The characters were fun. I loved their different personalities although they felt a bit flat at times. Most of them were quirky enough that they stuck with me throughout the story and had me wishing I could spend more time with them.

"High Fantasy. First Loves. Second-Hand Books."

Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree is another cosy fantasy that you could almost fall asleep to! Almost...

This novel is a prequel to Legends & Lattes, taking a peek at Orc Viv's life before opening a coffee shop in Thune. Following a battle, Viv is injured and ends up in the seaside town of Murk, where she makes friends with Fern, owner of a rundown bookshop, and her furry pet Potroast. Between reading books recommended by Fern, she has a summer fling with the gnome owner of the nearby bakery, Maylee, clashes with the town doctor Highlark and Gatewarden Iridia, gets into a fight, which lands her a night in jail and battles not once but twice with a necromaner.

I borrowed a copy of this book from Taunton Library and listened to it on cloudLibrary. As with his first novel, Travis Baldree was the audiobook narrator, which I appreciated. I read this for the 52 Book Club Summer Reading Challenge 2024, for prompt 21, team football/soccer, double letter word in the title.

Excellent book. Very chill read with just enough conflict to be interesting. It is a prequel to Legends and Lattes but it is not required reading outside of the epilogue.

This was such a delightful follow up to Legends & Lattes! Strong themes of appreciation of people and moments in time.

I don’t know what I expected when I started this book but it was far more emotional than I was prepared for. I thought I’d get a fun, romantasy D&D crossover. And it’s true, this book involves swordfights, mercenaries, and necromancers. But it’s also a very touching book about the growing stages of your life and sometimes not being the right person at the right time. It left me with the best kind of heartache.
