Viv’s career with the mercenary company Rackam’s Ravens isn’t going as planned. She was wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer and is packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy town of Murk. So far the only action she has to look forward to is staring out at the ocean. Spending her free time at a beleaguered bookshop.

I enjoyed this cozy read. I read this before reading Legends and Lattes, so was not disappointed in the similar plotlines. It was just enough action to satisfy the D&D player in me but not not so much that it took away from the flow of the narrative.

This was probably in my top three books of the year. I loved it even more than Legends & Lattes and I adored that title too. It was a delight to catch Viv earlier in her life and see when she first witnessed a smaller and quieter life early in her career, which ended up staying with her to inspire her cafe much later. All of the characters were an absolute delight and the diversity of creatures and identities felt very natural. Baldree's narration is SO satisfying too. Do not sleep on the audio! His accents and delivery have a true storybook quality.

At its face, one might think this book is just a fun romp of magical creatures, but it goes much deeper than that. The growth and conversations and reflections that Viv and her friends experience are a generous mirror of what actually makes our own contemporary lives most rewarding: having trusted companions and a sense of community, welcoming new experiences, being open-minded, finding meaning in art, and discovering and reinvesting in one's passions.

2.75 I loved Legends and Lattes, it was a 5 star for me. This one I ended up putting down and picking up again later (soft dnf). I found the characters dialogue to be a little bit cringey. They were very much so women written by a man. I did find the second half a little boring, the first half was good. I was a little lost towards the end, but the epilogue was good. I also do feel like romance isn’t needed in the story. I loved watching Viv start her own coffee shop in the first one, this book kind of felt like a filler. I would continue if there are more in the series.

Solid.  Delivers more of the world in little snippets that feel natural rather than lore dumping.
