I'm grateful to have gotten an early copy to review, especially since I've been dying to read this one due to its absolutely chilling title. Yes, it's an engaging thriller, but there's so much more here: OCD and its challenges, the complexity of mother/daughter relationships, the Vietnam war and refugee experience, and how much we still don't know about intergenerational trauma. Reading it you see how much Annie, the main character, doesn't trust herself, which is also all-too-true for women, at least at some point in their lives and therefore relatable. Nguyen nailed the ending, and I appreciated the epilogue. I can't wait to read Nguyen's sophomore novel!

I switch from audio to physical with this one because I just couldn’t stand the narration. It went better when I read it myself but it still was just okay. It took a long time for all of the pieces to come together and I found myself wanting to DNF but I needed to know how it ended and why things were happening the way that they were. Now that I’ve finished it, I’m kind of disappointed that I sat through it. I guess it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Maybe a 3.75. I was digging the psychological aspects of this, and I feel like the disgust OCD was depicted realistically (the author appears to have first-hand experience). While the ending came together and revealed all of the missing pieces, I wasn’t surprised by it, and I thought it was a little abrupt and didn’t match the pacing of the rest of the book. I also would’ve liked more about the MC’s mother’s immigrant experience, as we only get one chapter directly from her point of view.

This was a solid, standard thriller. The middle dragged a little at times, but the ending felt like a decently-paced climax. The reveal felt a little out of nowhere. I also don’t know if we really got closure on the sort of main mystery/ initial incident of the death of her mother. Was it actually natural? Was it supposed to be something more like the other deaths? Not entirely sure.
Graphic: Animal death, Eating disorder, Emotional abuse, Mental illness, Death of parent, Murder, and Gaslighting
Moderate: Infidelity, Toxic relationship, and Violence
Minor: Car accident and War
