It’s difficult to review this book without spoiling anything, so I’ll just say this: The prose is utterly gorgeous and haunting—Rivers Solomon is an absolutely incredible writer and storyteller.

This could definitely be a triggering book, so please read with care! I didn’t find anything overly graphic or explicit, but there are definitely some disturbing things that occur. The trigger warnings in the “graphic” section I included were because they were themes throughout the story.

One negative someone noted was that it felt like the author was trying to check too many diversity boxes. My advice is to google the author and learn even the bare minimum about them and reflect on why you assume people can’t belong to all those identifies.
Anyway, painful read. I can’t tell if reading this was cathartic or not. Definitely to an extent, but still painful.

3.5-4 stars until the ending elevated it to a 4.5. This could be a book the sticks with me king after I've physically moved on.
Comparing it to the movie "Mysterious Skin" is, I think, an apt comparison.

There were pieces of this that I wish I could erase from my memory. Some graphic sexual stuff that was unpleasant for me and not at all titillating. And it didn’t ALL feel necessary to the story.

Otherwise, I loved this.

This is my first Rivers Solomon book, and I don't know if they're all this poetic and lyrical, but I was caught by surprise in a good way. Also caught by surprise a number of tropes I normally dislike--child abuse, dysfunctional families, animal deaths, plus the suggestion that the "haunting" might not be supernatural at all--that were handled so well, it still worked. This is graphic, but not gratuitous.
