BRUH
I think I loved it?
Beautiful writing, really incredible portrayal of sibling love/dynamics (their love for each other is by far the most vivid and touching part). Ending made me feel horrible--like really gross and sad-- which is definitely the point. Can't help but feel a little disappointed by it though. One of my favorite things about the book was the the myth/mysticism around the house--house as at least in part metaphor for trauma, memory, abuse etc. I think in some ways I would have preferred a more ambiguous ending. But I also suspect that might be the point. Something to be said for the banality of evil or whatever. I want to recommend it because I want to talk about it but also yeah huge CW.

There were pieces of this that I wish I could erase from my memory. Some graphic sexual stuff that was unpleasant for me and not at all titillating. And it didn’t ALL feel necessary to the story.

Otherwise, I loved this.

This book is amazing. It draws you in and holds you captive. It's dark and creepy, and gives you hints in so many directions that it's hard to know what's really happening. The main character is broken in ways that make them sympathetic, but also clearly unreliable as a narrator. Be ready for one hell of a ride.

saw this as a suggestion through my library’s newsletter and was stoked to get it so soon after placing a hold

and then i finished it in two days

the siblings, the writing, and the overall mystery of it all is what pulled me in. i once all siblings were in a house together, i immediately knew what that comfortable crowdedness felt like. even in their grieving, i related to that warmth-through-proximity. i was quickly endeared to the e-sibs and wanted desperately for them to get the closure they
(or maybe just one of them?)
needed

i sort of predicted the last few chapters, but still enjoyed the ride and i found that the most satisfying thing for me was how the way that it revealed sibling dynamics felt realistic

it’s not the horror i went in expecting, but ultimately appreciated in the end

Model home was not what I expected, but it was so good. Rivers Solomon had a beautiful way of writing and it’s always so impactful.
The timeline was a tad hard to follow at the beginning with flashbacks and POV changes, but after a while it was easier especially since all the characters were so distinct.
These characters were very complicated and real. The story follows a family that is very dysfunctional and traumatized and very real.
The ending was not what I saw coming at all and was hard to read but done so well.

Rivers Solomon does it again!
Model Home is a deeply unsettling and twisted tale about generational trauma, violence, racism, gentrification, and the way it shapes an individual.

Ezri's mother Eudora has dreams of building the perfect home with the perfect family and will stop at nothing to get it. Finally, it seems she has reached the top when their family moves into 677, a large model home in a gated white community in Dallas. Soon after, strange things begin to happen.

Years later, now grown, Ezri is called back to 677 when tragedy strikes again. They, along with their sisters, are finally forced to confront the traumas they've endured, and the secrets that lie within the walls of their family home.

Rivers is a master at crafting gory, horrific, tales with one of a kind characters that are as interesting as they are flawed. I deeply love the characters Rivers creates and the representation they take on. This author does not shy away from the uncomfortable realities that is the human experience.

Model Home is creepy, dark, and unforgiving , with passages that will turn your stomach and leave you wondering what you've just read.
The ending was one I did not see coming and truly left me haunted.
