Absolutely gorgeous prose telling a gripping, gut-wrenching, genre-transcending story. Works equally well as a horror novel and as a novel about real-life horrors. Something about the way Rivers Solomon writes is just totally engrossing to me.  Such a brilliant, fucked up, chilling, moving, story full of complicated and multi-layered characters.

Have you ever sensed that if you and the author were both students in a college creative writing class, the author would spend the entire time arguing with the professor and prevent other students from getting critiques on their work? That was this book for me. A very interesting premise that did not (again, for ME) pay off in the end. Rated 2 stars for some very well-written and evocative turns of phrase.

Model Home is so much more than a haunted house story and I would not recommend this to someone looking for your classic ghosts and supernatural phenomenons in a house.

Model home is about racism, hatred, and childhood trauma. How we run from the things we can’t face until we can’t run anymore, haunted by the moments that shaped and plague us.

Amazingly diverse representation in this novel, heartbreaking prose, and characters you feel you know. This one was a difficult read and it went to so many places I didn’t expect. This reminded me a lot of White is for switching, where the house itself may or may not actually be the issue here….

Written in a weird flowery unnatural way. Also MC kills a dog to write a poem in its blood around page 50. Seems to be for shock value. Nothing worth continuing reading for. Didn’t find it interesting or enjoyable enough to get past that.

Something I never expected.  Soo slow and eerie.  It’s just wow twist and turns that jerked me around then the final twist took me out.

Like other reviews have said, this is absolutely a dark and heavy story. Strongly recommend reviewing and minding the content warnings. It features graphic depictions of trauma throughout and how the ways we suffer in our childhood shape us into adulthood.
It also explores how the narratives we tell ourselves after experiencing trauma shape and affect the rest of our lives. This takes the forms of exploring psychosis, disassociation and other tactics many survivors of child abuse use to make sense of their lives later on.

I definitely think it can be can be considered a horror in that it has the effect of disturbing, shocking and scaring the reader as they learn of the ways these children have suffered. With this said, it's a horror in a fully unexpected way and people expecting a really traditional horror novel may be disappointed.
I think that the ways that a story of racism and child sexual abuse become a haunted house story make for truly compelling and creative storytelling .

Those who have grown up with similar traumas will see themselves reflected in this story in a way that's likely to be very painful but may also be cathartic. For everyone else, this is a story that sticks with you in many ways. I expect to think about it for a long time.

There were pieces of this that I wish I could erase from my memory. Some graphic sexual stuff that was unpleasant for me and not at all titillating. And it didn’t ALL feel necessary to the story.

Otherwise, I loved this.
