I read this in one day because I simply couldn't put it down. It is such an honest, raw expression of trauma and what it means to live and be part of the world.

This one was a slow burn for me. Expected straightforward horror; got something far more complex, but uniquely frightening instead. I did have momentary struggles with jumps between characters, but not enough to dissuade me from finishing. It was worth the ride.

I did appreciate the tender complexity of the siblings and their family in general. It felt very real.

'Model Home' by Rivers Solomon is a literary horror novel that delves into the horrors of childhood and familial trauma.
Ezri fled xer family's suburban Texas home as soon as xe were old enough to leave. Xe now live in England with xer daughter though xey still deal with the fallout from the hauntings that plagued xer family home. When xer parents stop answering the phone, xey head home with an ominous feeling, only to find that both of xer parents have passed away. Did they die a natural death or did the house exact revenge? As Ezri seeks out answers, xey are forced to confront what xer childhood was really like.
Solomon does such an exceptional job of placing you in the head of their characters. Ezri is struggling through a lot in this novel and as the reader, Solomon brings you along very closely with xer experience. This is a tough novel. It delves into a lot of horrible things and Solomon doesn't spare the reader from the true horrors. This is very much a literary horror. Solomon's writing is evocative, which helps bring you into their character's experiences and the horrors of the family home. They add in thoughtful commentary about the experience of a Black family living in a mostly White suburban neighborhood, complicated sibling dynamics, and reconciling memories of one's parents with how they actually acted. Solomon continues to bring a level of thoughtful commentary, evocative writing, and human characters to their work that is above and beyond most other writers' skill.

An absolute stunner. Hooked me from the start and did not let go. I had high hopes going in because Sorrowland is one of only a few other 5-star reads, and Rivers Solomon did not disappoint. Excruciating at times to read (see the content warnings) but so well-written and handled with great care.
