Whew, buckle up for this one. Make sure to read the content warnings.
I struggled to get through this book. Not because it wasn’t well written, because it was. But the darkness did threaten to put me off a bit. And it is I think, necessarily dark. And then there was a bit in the middle where I thought I wasn’t getting it, there was some larger metaphor I was missing, or I couldn’t determine whether the narrator was reliable, or I dreaded to find out the twist. But really compelling, raw, twisted, difficult. It’s kind of “get out” vibes - the horror elements are layered in being black or queer or disabled or all of the above in America.

Here I am on the other side of reading this book, and no, I am not okay. Matter of fact, I want to fight somebody, anybody really.

Solomon's writing and style embodied Ezri so much so that it felt disjointed at times as I was reading it. I found myself having to backtrack to understand the subtle shifts in Ezri's mind. It made since why... eventually, but it took so long to get to the climax of the story. I guess that built suspense, but I also got frustrated because it started to feel like revealing the truth of the haunted house was being drawn out.

BRUH
I think I loved it?
Beautiful writing, really incredible portrayal of sibling love/dynamics (their love for each other is by far the most vivid and touching part). Ending made me feel horrible--like really gross and sad-- which is definitely the point. Can't help but feel a little disappointed by it though. One of my favorite things about the book was the the myth/mysticism around the house--house as at least in part metaphor for trauma, memory, abuse etc. I think in some ways I would have preferred a more ambiguous ending. But I also suspect that might be the point. Something to be said for the banality of evil or whatever. I want to recommend it because I want to talk about it but also yeah huge CW.

🫨🫨🫨 WHAT!!! I am not usually a horror guy, but I was hooked by this. Exploring trauma and cptsd through a haunted house??? I think Rivers Solomon did an incredible job of writing this in a way that embodies the chaos of unpacking trauma and ~remembering~ what our brains have blocked out. I am in shambles after everything came together at the end, and while I had suspicions of some of that reveal this story really kept me on my toes. WOW.

First book of 2025 and WOW. I literally TORE through this book and finish it in a couple of hours. There were many parts that made me very uncomfortable and it could be triggering for many people but overall the book is amazing.
