I was not sure i would like this for at least 50% but when it all came together it really wowed me! I recommend checking trigger warnings before picking this up.

An absolute stunner. Hooked me from the start and did not let go. I had high hopes going in because Sorrowland is one of only a few other 5-star reads, and Rivers Solomon did not disappoint. Excruciating at times to read (see the content warnings) but so well-written and handled with great care.

I'd walk down any literary path with Solomon. At first I was disappointed it was so short - but when the reveal happened (truly horrifying, because of the plausible aspects) I saw how the story needed to be tighter than their other works. You still have to trust Solomon but they won't betray you. But do read the content warnings! There isn't detailed child molestation on page but the dread and implications of past and active abuse are gnarly.
The 'haunting' turns out to be white neighbours who have been drugging the protagonist's family and, in the case of an older female neighbour molesting the protagonist most of their childhood. The protagonist's teen child is also groomed and assaulted by a different female pedophile. The protagonist's inner monologue of self-hatred and disgust might be rough for someone who is in a depressive episode or struggling with autistic burnout.

First of all, this is not a haunted house novel nor a traditional horror story. This is a raw, frank, and challenging literary book that faces horrifying childhood trauma and its consequences into adulthood head-on. There are many sad truths represented here, but they are written with care and compassion despite their stark natures. Solomon's writing is exquisite throughout and bolsters the rawness with keen poetic insight and detail. The ultimate reveal and the ending didn't quite do it for me, but I think the strength of the novel comes through with its protagonist's poetic reflections and the striking themes of intersectionality of pain and living as a justice-seeking person in this oft unfair world. Be mindful of the trigger warnings, as this book does not cut corners nor fade to black.

Anyone should read Rivers Solomon's work if not for their writing alone. The prose, like in all their works, is simply beautiful.

I was immediately on board when I heard fae was going to publish faer own spin on the haunted house. They use this to explore themes of mental illness, trauma, complex familial relationships, racism and queerness in an outstanding way.

In the end though I don't know how to feel about the ending, I didn't expect an explanation for all that happened in the house - but knowing what I know now, I would love to reread this in the future, catch all the intricacies in this beautiful work.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

The writing was impeccable, but there was a sexually explicit scene that felt disturbing to me. I didn't want to be surprised by another such scene (it was consensual), and thus have ended it.  I am sure those who don't mind these things can enjoy the literary style writing of this horror.
