I wasn't sure about reading this book as the reviews on Amazon were kinda meh, but I was pleasantly surprised. The twists and turns this story takes is pretty amazing and takes a hard look at the psychological aspect of deep space voyages. I would love for there to be a second book as I think there is just so much more to discover here.

Good story, good following of the psychological stuff going on in the kids' heads. Just for the record, this sort of pressure on teens would be a bad idea. LOL. Very interesting and well-written. I might have liked more exposition of the decisions of the kids at the end.

Set in an alternate timeline Earth where the space race really didn't stall, but kept on going to the stars. The Moon, Mars and Europa have all been explored and now humanity is racing towards a new home Terra Two. The British have set up an academy to train potential astronauts and six young teens are selected for a 23 year mission to Terra Two. They will be the first to arrive with their four adult companions on a new world. Right before launch tragedy strikes and a member of the team is dead. A substitute is immediately pushed through but this changes the dynamic of the team. How will they cope with their grief from not only losing their friend but from leaving behind everything they know and love?

That is the central question of this book. It is a hard one to describe. It is a space drama, but it is more about the people and the psychological effect this long journey to a new home has on them. There is not a lot of action (though there is some), but there is a lot of conflict between the characters as they work through the process of grieving their losses. The six teens are each unique and each bring their own sets of baggage along on the journey. It is an interesting look at how space travel can affect you mentally and physically. It is also a journey to the core of who each of these characters are and what their true strengths and weaknesses are.

Interesting and engaging! 4.5 - but that rounds up to 5 stars.

I like stories about the human condition regardless of where they are set. This one felt like it would be that way, but when you reach the end, you don't feel like the characters have grown. And the ending is so unfulfilling that it made me dislike having gone on the journey at all. It felt like it was a waste of my time.

Maybe this could be a condition of it being YA, but I don't feel like I ever connected with any of the characters. At least with books like The Wanderers, the characters were intriguing even if the story was also flat and went nowhere. This one just didn't come up with any redeeming qualities in the end.

DNF. I really wanted to enjoy this story, as the setting and the idea was great, but I just could not get into it. I found so many of the characters uninteresting, unlikeable, or both.
