Some of the best sci-fi I’ve ever read

My review of this book has everything to do with my profession. I'm an organization development consultant, which means I spend my days helping bring people together and work with their differences to come up with creative solutions. So when I read a book in which 10 people are thrown together in a small space for 23 years without thought of how they're going to develop community or handle conflict, it drives me a little crazy.

This book is well written, well plotted, and interesting. But I just couldn't get over the fact that several of the crew members have psychological issues which should have been flagged before departure. There should have been major efforts devoted to community building and group dynamics prior to departure. Rather than enjoying this book, I kept wanting to get in there and redesign their processes and help them with through collective issues. On the plus side, that does mean that the characters were written in a way that made them very real. On the minus side, they made me want to tear my hair out!

I'm very conflicted about this book.

I LOVED part one. The writing was gorgeous, the character development was good, I loved everything about it. I had the book from the library, but almost bought it for myself based on the first few chapters.

But. the middle / end got progressively worse. Once they left Earth, it D R A G G E D and was just kind of a bummer. All the characters became unlikeable, but if I was stuck in close quarters with other people that long, I would be unlikeable too

I'm not sure this was actually meant to be a horror book, but space is terrifying! I thought I would have trouble reading this in the time I had, but despite its length it was really engrossing.
