Unbelievably stunning!!

Temi Oh has crafted a brilliantly beautiful story!! Finishing this book made me violently sob. The characters' complexities, relationships, and situations they find themselves in are done incredibly well. I felt as if I were on the ship with them, heading to Terra-Two!! My heart breaks for these characters in unfathomable ways.

This book does not shy away from talking about trauma and other hard-to-tackle conversations. So I have done my best to compile adequate content warnings for this book below.

Additional content warnings:
Religious cult, depression, and Harry Potter and JKR references.

This book is character-focused. I like the New Creationists as a concept (ofc the Christian apocalypse cult is American) and how Astrid became infatuated with them.

There is social commentary weaved throughout the Beta’s stories. But it feels just like a one off mention that some of the Beta’s experiences with racism, classsism/poverty, misogyny etc. rather than how these things impact their interactions and work on the ship.

I also would have liked to have more
interactions with the shēngmìng crew
, as they might have served as a reflection/counterpoint to damocles.

This is some of the best science fiction, specifically space science fiction, I've ever read. The author masterfully captures the dichotomy between the hope of space travel, especially as a way to save humans from themselves, and the reality of the nationalism and child abuse that would occur if children were trained up to participate in it from a young age. The fact that things were already going off the rails before the group even got into space goes to show how willing governments are to screw over their best and brightest for political capital. So many cover-ups and scandals.

The vibe of the book to me is the tension of feeling forced to smile in front of an audience but like your smile is unconvincing so you smile bigger to compensate

I've seen this book described as The 100 meets Becky Chambers and yes, that rings true.  It's slice of life with philosophical discussions in space.  The characters are so flawed and so loveable.  I missed them when it was over and I still miss them now.

Also, this book is really, really long and has very little plot.

So, if you're ready to journey through space with some highly intelligent (almost to their detriment) young adults who are working through their own moral dilemmas while also working to solve humanity's greatest downfall, buckle up and hop on board.

Reading recommendations: time, a cozy seat, and a warm blanket with a cuppa.

The plot was interesting and engaging during the first part of the book but fell apart during the end. The ending felt incomplete, as if there was a chapter or two missing. The characters were all engaging and interesting and all felt like they were the age they canonically were.
I struggle to understand what purpose Ara's death was supposed to serve other than shock and a way to provide tension in Jesse and Eliot's stories. I thought it was foreshadowing the fate of the crew, but in the end it felt more like fridging.
