I keep thinking about this book. It's characters, it's story, it's ending. That's it. I can't stop thinking about this story.

A slow burn and suspense novel about kids and a futuristic world that parallels colonialism <3 through space travel. I still think about these characters and this story even after a couple years since reading. I would definitely reread it.

This is a reminder of why I tend not to read YA books. The characters annoy me, the focus is more on relationships amongst teenagers than events I would care about if they were actually described in any detail, etc. etc. There is no reason for this book to be set in space, other than a few events that feel like they were included because the writer was suddenly reminded this is a book about space travel, rather than actually having had an direction for the book's plot to travel towards.
I have so many questions about why anyone thought this would be a good idea.
Who in their right mind would send a group of teenagers into space on a seemingly crucial mission to colonise another planet? Why must the crew be awake for the whole 20+ year trip, and I assume be trained on the way there, when they could send actual, qualified adults in cryo-sleep or something? Why not get the teenagers, whose team member just committed suicide days before they are launched into space never to see planet earth again, any kind of mental health assistance at all? Why not make sure all the children you are sending into space can actually get along?

From the unrealistic plot premise, to the hundreds of pages with no action, to the abrupt ending that left me hanging — presumably to leave room for a sequel, one that I hope is never written — this is one of the worst books I've ever read. I'm sorry for the uncharacteristically negative review, so I will say something positive. This book reached a sweet spot in writing that I have never encountered before — I was simultaneously more bored and aggravated with every chapter.

This book started really slow but had a good build up. I found the ending to be a little rushed and felt unsatisfied with all of the build up. I loved the concept of the story.
