3.5 stars. I’m looking forward to diving more into this series and getting to know the characters more. A strong start to a series, but too short at this point for me to be smitten.
I love Buck. I love Nadia.
This is a totally quirky cast of characters and I literally laughed out loud more times than I can count reading some of the banter between Al & Buck. Al goes on tangents sometimes in the best way, because often the stories he starts to tell give some insight into the world or the history and give a better understanding while being hilarious.
I love that this book is one I could recommend to female or male readers, and I love a MC that is up there in years and life experience.

I enjoy Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series a lot. I have several in MPB, signed by the author on my Keeper Shelf. I like listening to them too.
Now I have a new series to add to my favorites and I plan to listen to the whole series. So long as Luke Daniels narrates. He is the superb choice to tell the story, excellent accents and quite a lot of the reason that had me sitting in the driveway or parking lot for just a bit more.
Quite a lot was also the characters, premise, setting, action, world-building, story...
Al's curse where he can't talk to people unless through an app on his phone or risk them hating him intensely. Luke Daniels, the narrator, flows from 'thought-voice' Al to 'app-voice' Al flawlessly and that likely is what caught me up immediately in the story.
I liked the way Al took the investigation given him and ran with it. I liked the sigils he draws and keeps in pockets in his coat. I liked the flashbacks. I liked the Battle-seer. I liked the fae characters.
I am so glad I got over my concern that I might not like this series as much or at all as Iron Druid. It's fantastic and I highly recommend the book, series and author. If you get a chance to listen to it, do so.

It actually took me a much longer time than a day to read this because I started it early last year. Unfortunately, I did not realize that it contained mild spoilers for the iron druid chronicles, which I had been reading at the same time. When I found that it was a companion novel, I did not realize that there would be any information about Atticus O’Sullivan and his adventures.
Once I finished the iron druid chronicles and was able to get back to this story. I had a hard time, going in fits and starts until yesterday. It was a fun and action packed tale, much like Hearne’s other stories. I think what this one truly lacked, however, was a truly lovable character like Oberon.

This is what happens when you give a frat boy a laptop and tell him to write a story. Brawling leprechauns, swearing hobgoblins and a mute ink wizard oh my. It took my a while to get into this story because while the action kinda started right at the beginning I just didn't care about any of it.
This had a great cast of characters and I am partial to Nadia. The name Buck Foi was just annoying as hell and wholly immature and not as funny as I think the author wants it to be.
This was a fun read, but frankly the 'mystery" was sorely lacking. Al didn't actually detect nor uncover anything. He didn't make any grand discoveries. All of his hints and clues were supplied by other people. Saxon should get the big bonus for giving Al every single clue that he cobbled together, with a hat tip to Eli as well.
And the reason for all this run around was pretty thin too, but I guess everyone has to start somewhere. There just wasn't enough in between the pages. The story limps along and relies on the by play between Al and Buck a little too much.
I will say that I enjoyed the book and I will be looking into any others of the series, but the actual plot bogs them down.
