Some notes I like I am, you are approaching these as a fan of Oscar Wilde’s other work:
- they were written for children
- many of them have a religious bent, with god literally interfering and morally correcting the characters’ sacrifices
- they are mostly pretty dark
- the prose is beautiful

It took me so long, because I kept stacking more current reads on top in my tbr and while I want to read more classics, I am definitely a distracted mood reader. I have no idea when I actually started this book.

One of the main things I miss about taking English Lit classes, was set deadlines to finish books I wouldn’t necessarily pick up on my own. Life needs more Lit classes. Lol. Bookclub is a start, but we are all in the same boat for time and attention.

I’m glad I read this. Nope, not a book to read for a Happy Ending. Go ahead and binge if you can,  but I took breaks between stories.
fast-paced

These stories are more interesting from a scholarly perspective than they are good fairy tales. The only real good story here is the fisherman and his soul. outside of that, it’s more interesting to see the political elements of the time be talked about in the realm of fairy tales than the actual quality of the stories.

Also if it’s not apparent these stories aren’t really for kids.

maybe i'm not that into oscar wilde's fairy tales?

I didn't expect the religious tones of these stories, p. craig russell's art was familiar and welcome after seeing his art in the sandman, but the stories themselves were okay to me.

Continuing with Irish authors I've neglected, it's time for some Oscsr Wilde. Beautiful artwork complements these two stories quite well.

I am not generally a fan of fairy tales, but this volume proved to me that I am an ever growing fan of Oscar Wilde. Also, that fairy tales can be more subtle and more progressive than the ones to which I am accustomed. Highly recommended.

"the nightingale and the rose" destroyed me.
