Excellent novella, if you enjoy the classic style mixed with early modernism. Needless to say, it's quite marred by the racism of the colonial era, treating Africans as mere scenery and only begrudgingly granting them humanity. Behind the setting itself this book stands as a visionary existential question, which remains potent even if it pales in comparison to a masterpiece like Moby dick, a book which Conrad claimed to dislike.

I am very compelled by Heart of Darkness, not for it itself, but for the discourse around it. It’s truly fascinating.
Although I can’t denied, the story is masterfully written and well narrated in the audiobook I listened to. It wasn’t this particular one, but the one I found on Spotify had absolutely no voice actor credits and I couldn’t be bothered to search for another hour to find whoever narrated that version. (For anyone interested, it’s the one with a black-and white cover uploaded during the July of 2023.

I can't believe I finally finished it. It took me a week and a half to slog through the whole 100 pages of this. Surely we have other books to hold up as great examples of modernist literature that don't involve this much racist and sexist drivel.

This book was difficult to read at points because of the racist attitudes and actions of many of the characters. I recognize it was a product of its time. But I am not of that time. The language was very evocative. The book is wonderfully written.

read for a uni class and it was okay

i hated pretty much every character but i got a 100 on my essay for it so thats something i guess
