I really liked the characters and the plot (and the spice👀), but the story progressed a bit too slow for me😕 I’m also not a huge fan of Edgar Allen Poe, so the imagery and allusions to his texts very much went over my head😭 I do want to see more of Lola, Cil, and Pax bc there’s no way you can just end it like that and not have Donato get his comeuppance🙃

Inspired by The Raven. After reading this I had to reread the Raven.

I loved how Lola, Paxton and Cillian all took care of each other. They all know what will help calm, excite and what will drive them wild. I appreciate that N.J. talked about the different love languages that they characters have. And how the characters know this and help make them feel more loved because of it.

Cuervo's Carnvial gave off the best dark, spooky and carnival vibes this book was giving off. The spicy bits were steamyAF (fans self).

I loved the paranormal aspect of this book and how Lola's present is connected to the past.

I loved getting the whole backstory and the way that we received them (I don't want to give too much away). I am looking forward to the next full length novel.

I enjoyed the characters. The spice was spot on. Just enough for the story. Started off feeling confused but it was soon easy to follow the story. Loved the Edgar Allen Poe references. The epilogue left me with the feeling we have not seen the end of Lola, Cillian, & Pax

Heed A Raven's Warning

TW: Death, Grief, Violence, Depression and Anxiety.

Cuervo's Carnival is a dark romance that gives you chills, suspense and mystery. If you love dark, macabre poetry, this novella is a good place to start.

Lola is looking for a way to get from under the control of the Reapers. Being promised to another, Lola refuses to live her life by anyone's terms but her own.

Lola, Cillian and Pax have a deep love that is rooted in trust and understanding. Cillian and Pax need Lola more than they need air and is willing to do what it takes to be with her even if it means breaking away from the Reapers.

Fans of Edgar Allen Poe would appreciate this modern retelling of the Raven. The symbolism and eerie plot makes for a chillingly, romantic story.

NJ is the queen of haunted books that make you question what is going on.

Loved the relationship and dynamic between Lola, Cillian and Paxton. They all had dark and difficult pasts, and they were able to find healing and solace together.

Loved the mysterious vibes and the haunted carnival atmosphere. Some parts made me question what was going on and whether it was all in Lola’s head. It was nice to see some of the scenes through different characters’ eyes, and how Lola’s grief played a part in her story and character development.

Hauntingly beautifully written. I already know I need to reread this at some point to fully understand everything that happened. Can’t wait to read more!

Love me some spooky spicy vibes. She does an awesome job of world building for this novella, you definitely get all the mysterious creepy carnival eerie feelings.

Lola develops gifts of initiation & darkness when her grandma passes and causes some weird shit to go down at the abandoned carnival that her & Cillian/Pax (her lovers) are crashing.

My god the MMF scenes in this book are melt your panties off hot. I caught myself blushing multiple times and that rarely happens lol. I did find myself a little confused throughout the book, I know with novellas its hard to have a lot of detail but I felt like there was a lot of things happening in such a short book which left me craving more info.

Tropes:

This is basically just creepy erotica. There's no plot and no character development.

“Do not fear death, because no amount of worrying will change the consequence of mortality.”

Cuervo’s Carnival is supernatural, spiritual and sexy novella about trying to escape destiny in an abandoned carnival, but Lola is continually haunted by a symbol she’s seen her whole life…her first instinct is to shut it out and run. But sometimes we need to embrace what haunts us. Not only bad things come in threes

It seemed like NJ Weeks took all these enticingly dark and macabre themes and wrote them into this one amazing novella. Even though it is considered a novella I was pleasantly surprised by how the story flowed cohesively. I was captivated and inspired by the entire book, and I have been listening to the playlist on repeat.
