The prose is magical and extremely quotable, the story telling is brilliant with it's constant plot twists and developed characters. There are also some beautiful messages about sticking by your principles despite even the hardest of trials, I found Jane's character extremely strong for that, and she's not yet 20!
If it were for that I'd give it 5 stars, however the 2nd half is heavily racist, ableist, xenophobic, and classist. Themes of colonialism and religious missions, institutionalisation, grooming (Jane is sadly very much groomed by the men in her life), etc. There is no condemnation of any of this, no revolt against bigotry in the narrative. Therefore, I can't give it a pass for being "of its time", as there are many classics which either resist against or refuse to entertain such bigotry.

Astonishing that this is billed as a romance. The colonialist bent was equally unwelcome.

I finally understand when people are talking about the books that made them fell in love with reading. My reading process was so agreable, and I was captivated by Charlotte Brontë writing style. The story is so accessible and I really loved the first part.

I am less a fan of too much detail that can be given during a character depiction. The pacing is really good even though I felt like the second part was dragging on. The characters are all well written, despite the fact that I didn't particularly like any of them.

I am a bit disapointed because at some point in the story some things didn't make a lot of sense anymore and characters started to be unpleasing... Also, I wasn't charmed by the love story mainly because I have a hard time engaging with big age gap relationships.

Even then I totally share the love that people have for this masterpiece of storytelling and it's definitely one of those books that make you forget about time.
