A bit long especially the first half. The first trilogy was better.

Great start but the finish left me... unsettled. Feels like the ending was supposed to wrap everything up but it didn't. The wrap up felt ... off. The previous trilogy was much better.

This is better than the previous book, but only worth 2.5 stars. Most of the characters were fairly dull and the story slow and predictable. I am glad i have now finished this series. I do have other Canavan books, so hopefully they will revert back to the storytelling from her first trilogy.

This book was amazing!! I loved it so much! I have been waiting for over a year since I bought this book to finally get around to reading it. It is the final book in the Traitor Spy trilogy and the ongoing story following Sonea. The book was filled with so many emotional moments, both happy and sad.
I loved the budding romance between
SpoilerSonea and Regin and the way that Sonea analysed her feelings because she couldn’t believe that she would be attracted to him. Similarly Lorkin did not think that it could happen because he believed that Sonea had never forgiven Regin for their Novice days.

I was annoyed that Dannyl
Spoilerdid end up getting with Achati despite all the repercussions that it could have caused, even though there was a clear attraction there from both sides. However I was just as upset for Dannyl when he watched Achati being killed. I am now hopeful though that Dannyl and Tayend will get a chance to repair their relationship once they have finished grieving for the loss of Achati.

One thing that did annoy me about the book was that there seemed to be rather too many mistakes, often misplaced names. For example Lorkin would be talking to Tyvara but when he reached out to hold her hand it was Savara’s that he grasped. This kind of mistake was annoying as it broke up the flow of the story, making me pause briefly to work out what it was supposed to say, which is especially annoying in the really engaging emotional scenes.
Something that I could not believe was the way in which
SpoilerCery died. It was a bit sudden and normal. I expected that if he died it would be because Skellin killed him or he got buried while exposing Skellin to the Guild. Of course this way makes it more real and there had been many hints at his advancing years and decreasing health. Overall though I would say that Cery’s death was the only one of note within the whole book, which is actually a very good survival rate for the main characters (Achati’s death was only notable through the effect it had on Dannyl).

The story although very serious with the dealing of the war between the Traitors and the Sachakans and with what was happening to Cery and the roet problems in the city and Guild, did have some brilliant comedy moments. Ones that would literally make you stop reading for laughter. Such as when
SpoilerTyvara slyly asks Lorkin how you accidently concentrate very hard and his scrambling for an acceptable answer.

I cannot believe that this story is finally over and will be looking out for more books by Canavan in the future. This book receives a very well deserved five stars.
