It is a long book. It is a slow book. At times it’s a bit boring, at times it’s a bit repetitive. But it’s wonderful. Throughout the book we learn about his family, his life, but also politics and history of Jerusalem, we read some funny stories from his childhood as well as some painful memories. I can’t explain why I enjoyed the book so much. Maybe because of its Kwangju and some repetitions it feels like we get to know his family and the author so well. Maybe because the pace of the book resembles the lace of everyday life. Maybe because some fragments are so captivating that I did it mid getting through the more boring bits to get to me next one. It’s not the kind of book I would usually enjoy and it was my second attempt at this book (in the first one I gave up after 160 pages). But this time I finished the whole book and it was definitely time well spent.
