I was disappointed in the treatment of Karen’s relationship in the ending  of the book. Also the handling of the issue with Mitja. How could one not see your spouse differently after that? Just brushing it away and pretty much absolving them?

This is a good gripping crime thriller that starts with a skeleton being found on the roof of a derelict building and leads the investigation to London and Croatia and a past filled with horror and revenge. The story develops well with a slow build to start with before escalating as the strands begin to cross and weave together. In between the main story there is the background to how Maggie and Mitja met and how their relationship developed, which seems disjointed to start but reveals intriguing facts and hints that build up the background and leads to the big reveal at the end.

My favorite Val McDermid novel that I’ve read, so far! A fantastic mystery/thriller. I learned a lot about the Balkan Wars, and picked up some cool forensic science tidbits, as well! Karen Pirie is a great character, relatable an and tough as nails…

A good book, I'll definitely read more by this author and try to solve it more than two pages before the reveal
