A very depressing and slightly tedious read. Very dense with stream-of-consciousness. Without knowing the societal context of the book, it would be easy to miss the analogy of her periodic deafness with the Austrian population's attitude toward The Holocaust. Not as successful as her book The Wall. On reflection, I think with judicious editing this would have been a successful 100 page short story.
